A section of Highway 84 near Amity will be closed for a month beginning Monday, Oct. 19, as the Arkansas Department of Transportation replaces a bridge superstructure over the Antoine River.

The closure will begin at 8 a.m. Oct. 19 and continue around the clock until 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, according to David Greenwood, a staff heavy bridge maintenance engineer with ARDOT.

The affected section of Highway 84 is between County Road 26 and 11980 Highway 84, near Amity. The bridge is identified by ARDOT as M1555.

During the closure, Highway 84 will be open to local traffic only between Highway 8 and the junction of Highways 27 and 70.

Motorists traveling westbound on Highway 84 will be directed to take Highway 8 west to Glenwood, then Highway 70 west toward Kirby. Eastbound motorists will take Highway 70 east to Glenwood, then Highway 8 east toward Amity.

The closure will also affect residents along Caney Valley Cutoff Road.

Pike County Judge Eddie Howard announced on Facebook that access to the road will be restricted throughout the bridge replacement project.

“The end of Caney Valley Cuttoff will also be closed down for the duration off the bridge closure,” Howard wrote. “The only way in or out will be from the Ebenezer road for the inhabitants of Caney Valley Cuttoff.”

The project involves replacing the bridge’s superstructure, which is the portion of a bridge above its supporting foundation, including the deck and structural components that carry traffic.

ARDOT has not provided additional details about the work or whether the closure could be extended because of weather or other construction delays.
