After months of planning, the Downtown Glenwood Farmers Market — which will be held each Saturday morning through the summer — was launched on Saturday, May 23.

Glenwood Downtown Network President Kayla Hartsfield, who organized it with Effie O’Neal of Araminda Farms, said she was pleased with the number of vendors and the turnout.

She described the event on N. 2nd Street at Broadway as “a full blown neighborhood block party” with live music while friends, neighbors and out-of-towners visited and perused produce and other items for sale.

After opening at 8 a.m., light rain began falling about 9:45, with strong winds kicking in a short time later, and by 10, heavy rain was coming down prompting organizers to end the event two hours early.

But Hartsfield said this was still a great debut and hopefully is an indicator of what future turnout will be like during good weather. She said she spoke with Mayor Billy Plyler on Tuesday, May 26, thanking him and the city council for their support, along with assistance from city employees.

Businesses in the area saw an increase in foot traffic that morning, Hartsfield said, which she feels will give a boost to the local economy.
