Jesse Bevis Ramsey, known affectionally by everyone as “Babe”, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, at the age of 91. His legacy lives on through the miles of roads he helped build across Arkansas and countless laughs he shared with everyone who worked with him.

He was born on May 23, 1935, to Bill and Mattie (Dooley) Ramsey in Alf, AR. He lived a life of grit, humor, and hard work. As a master dozer operator, he took his job very seriously and had great pride in helping build the roads and interstates that we still use today, before finally settling down in his hometown to work until his retirement.

But as seriously as he took his work, he never took himself too seriously. He was best known for his ever-joking personality and love for harmless practical jokes. He absolutely loved kids, probably because he related to them so well, and he had a way of making them laugh hysterically, they always wanted to be around him.

Hunting seasons were his vacations, and he was an avid hunter who loved tracking deer and turkey. He enjoyed spending this time too with his hunting buddies. He was also an exceptional gardener.

He married Bernice Reynolds on January 11, 1963. Together, they shared a lifetime of real love—weathering all of life’s inevitable ups and downs, but always devoted to one another and the family they built.

His strength, his mischief, and his fierce love will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.

He is survived by his two daughters, Gail Horn (husband Keith) of Glenwood and Lynn Foster of Mena; his grandchildren, Justin McKenzie and Jaylin Ramsey; and his sister, Katy Brandon of Texas; sisters-in-law, Retha Romero, Doris Lewis, Jan Smedley, and Kay Reynolds, as well as a host of extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Bernice (Reynolds) Ramsey; son, JJ; son-in-law Rick Foster; brother Pete Ramsey; and sisters Tess Price and Tolly Barron.

A celebration of his life was held Saturday, July 25, 2 p.m. at the Hill Side Cemetery. Pallbearers: Russ Myers, James Ryan, Jackie Ryan, Keith Horn, Brad Reynolds, Sam Smedley and Billy Ryan. Honorary Pallbearers: Victor Ryan, Staff of Razorback Cottage #8, DaVita Dialysis.
